Chicken Meat Thermometers and Correct Probe Placement

A fast instant-read probe makes it easier to check several parts of chicken. For a whole bird, verify both the breast and inner thigh rather than relying on time or colour.

A chicken meat thermometer should respond quickly enough to check the thickest areas before too much oven heat escapes. For chicken breast, insert from the side into the centre of the thickest section. For a whole bird, also check the inner thigh without touching bone.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

Where do you put a meat thermometer in chicken breast?

Insert it into the centre of the thickest section, often from the side, so the sensing area is surrounded by meat and does not touch the tray.

Where do you check a whole chicken?

Check the thickest breast area and the innermost thigh area without touching bone. Sample another point if the readings differ.

Can colour show that chicken is safely cooked?

Colour and clear juices are not dependable substitutes for a core-temperature check. Use current food-safety guidance and a suitable thermometer.

Should the thermometer touch the bone?

No. Bone can conduct heat differently and produce a misleading reading; reposition the probe into the surrounding meat.
