Head Torches with Red Light for Night-Time Use

A red mode can preserve dark-adapted vision and be less intrusive around others, but check whether a lamp has continuous red light, red strobe or additional colours.

A head torch with red light gives you an alternative to white illumination when you want to move around at camp or check equipment without immediately flooding the area with bright light. Petzl TIKKA and ACTIK CORE list continuous red modes; Black Diamond Spot 400-R includes red night vision, while Storm 500-R adds green and blue modes.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

Why is there a red light on a headlamp?

Red light is commonly included for close tasks where preserving night vision or reducing glare to nearby people is useful. The exact brightness and behaviour vary, so check whether the model offers steady red, dimming or a flashing mode.

Is a red light head torch good for night vision?

A dim red setting can be less disruptive to dark-adapted vision than bright white light for some close tasks. It still emits light, so use the lowest suitable setting and allow your eyes time to adapt.

Do Petzl head torches have red light?

Several do. Petzl lists continuous red lighting on ACTIK CORE and TIKKA, with strobe options described on their product pages.

Can I use a head torch with a rear red light for running on roads?

A rear-facing light may help others notice you, but a head torch is not automatically an approved road light. Follow Irish road-safety requirements and the product maker’s warnings.
