Instant-Read Cooking Thermometers

Choose a fast, easy-to-clean probe with a readable display and a stated accuracy. Instant-read models are for spot checks, not for being left in the oven.

An instant-read cooking thermometer is the simplest tool for checking several points in a roast, fillet or batch of food just before serving. Insert the sensing area into the thickest part, wait for the reading to settle, then clean the probe before another food.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

What is an instant-read cooking thermometer used for?

It gives a quick spot reading inside food near the end of cooking. Check more than one location to find the coolest part.

Can an instant-read thermometer stay in the oven?

Usually not. Remove it after each check unless the manufacturer specifically describes the model as oven-safe.

How far should the probe go into meat?

Place the sensing section in the thickest part without touching bone, a tray or a large pocket of fat. Thin foods may need a sideways insertion.

How should an instant-read probe be cleaned?

Follow its care instructions and clean the stem between foods. Do not immerse the body unless the manufacturer gives an appropriate waterproof rating.
