Waterproof Headlamps and Head Torches: How to Choose

Match the maker’s ingress rating to the water exposure you expect.

A waterproof headlamp needs an ingress rating that matches its conditions. “Water-resistant” and “waterproof” are not interchangeable: an IPX4 model is intended for splashes, while immersion requires an explicit depth and duration rating. For a waterproof LED headlamp, compare the rating alongside runtime, controls and battery access. A head torch for kayaking should be suitable for spray; a head torch for swimming needs an explicit swimming or immersion rating. Do not take a general outdoor lamp underwater.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

Can you swim with a waterproof head torch?

Only if the manufacturer explicitly rates that exact model for immersion and states the permitted depth and duration. A splash-resistant rating alone is not enough.

What does IPX4 mean on a headlamp?

IPX4 indicates protection against splashing water under the applicable test conditions, not immersion.

Is a waterproof LED headlamp suitable for kayaking?

It may suit rain or spray if its official rating and instructions cover those conditions. Keep it within the stated limits.

How should I choose a waterproof head torch?

Match the official ingress rating to rain, spray or immersion, then compare beam type, controls and power source.
