WiFi Extenders with an Ethernet Port for Wired Devices

An Ethernet socket can connect a nearby device to the extended network, or let some extenders run as an access point from a wired connection. Check which mode and port speed the model supports.

If you need an Ethernet port on a WiFi extender, first decide what should connect to it. A smart TV, games console or desktop can use the extender as a wireless bridge; in access-point mode, some models take wired internet and broadcast WiFi.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

What does the Ethernet port on a WiFi extender do?

It can provide a wired connection from the extender to a device such as a TV or console. On models with access-point mode, it can also accept an Ethernet connection and create a WiFi access point.

Can I connect a smart TV to a WiFi extender by Ethernet?

Yes, if the extender has an Ethernet port and supports connecting wired clients in range-extender mode. Confirm the port and mode in the model manual.

Is a Gigabit port faster than a 10/100 Ethernet port?

A Gigabit port has a higher link-rate ceiling than a 10/100 port, but actual throughput also depends on the WiFi backhaul, router, device and broadband connection.

Can an extender with Ethernet replace a router?

Not necessarily. Access-point mode adds WiFi to an existing wired network; it does not automatically provide the routing, modem or firewall functions of a router.
