Dash Cam Mounting: Where and How to Install It

Mount the camera high on the windshield, normally behind or close to the rearview mirror, with the lens inside the swept area of the wipers. It must not obstruct your view or interfere with sensors, airbags or local windshield rules.

Dash cam mounting determines both the quality of the view and whether the installation becomes a distraction. A high, central windshield position usually gives the clearest road perspective while keeping the body out of your normal sightline. Check your state's rules before attaching anything to glass.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

Where is the best place to mount a dash cam?

Usually high on the windshield near the rearview mirror, where it sees the road but stays outside the driver's primary view. The legal area for windshield attachments varies by state.

Is an adhesive mount better than a suction cup?

Adhesive mounts are generally smaller and more stable. Suction mounts are easier to reposition or transfer, but their grip can change with glass condition and temperature.

Can I mount a dash cam on the dashboard?

Only if the camera supports that orientation and the installation does not obstruct the road view. Test for dashboard and windshield reflections before committing to the position.

How do I route a dash cam cable around airbags?

Keep wiring out of marked airbag zones and never bind it over an A-pillar curtain airbag. Follow the vehicle service information or use a qualified installer when the trim path is uncertain.

Does the dash cam lens need to be in the wiper area?

Yes, ideally. A lens outside the swept area may lose its view to rain, snow or grime even when the rest of the installation is correct.
