Dashcam OBD Power Adapters and Parking Mode

An OBD power cable can simplify a removable parking-mode installation, but it must be designed for the exact camera and vehicle. The diagnostic port is not a universal power socket.

A dashcam OBD adapter draws power through the vehicle's diagnostic connector, often allowing parking operation without tapping the fuse box. It can be easier to remove than a conventional hardwire kit, but compatibility must be explicit: connector shape alone does not make every OBD dashcam cable suitable.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

Can I power a dash cam from the OBD port?

Yes, with an adapter expressly designed for dash cam power and confirmed as compatible with the vehicle. Do not connect a generic cable based only on plug fit.

Will an OBD dashcam adapter drain the battery?

It may draw power while parked. Use a supported adapter with appropriate low-voltage protection and configure its operating mode according to the instructions.

Is OBD power better than hardwiring?

It is often easier to install and remove, while hardwiring can be more discreet and leaves the diagnostic port free. Compatibility and safe cable routing should decide.

Can a mechanic still use the OBD port?

The camera adapter must be removed or disconnected when the diagnostic connector is needed, unless an approved installation specifically provides managed access.
