Outside Car Camera Systems for Exterior Recording

For an exterior-mounted camera, weather resistance and a secure, legal installation come first. Then decide whether you need live maneuvering video, stored dash-cam footage, or both.

An outside car camera is built to view an exterior angle that an interior windshield camera may miss. Common uses include rear recording through opaque cargo areas, trailer views, side coverage, and a reversing display.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

Can a dash cam be mounted outside the car?

Only when the camera and its connections are explicitly designed for exterior use. A normal cabin camera may fail when exposed to water, road salt, vibration, and temperature swings.

What weather rating should an exterior car camera have?

Look for a manufacturer-published ingress rating and read what the rating covers. Installation quality still matters because connectors and cable entries can remain vulnerable.

Does an outside camera record when the car is parked?

That depends on the recorder and power setup, not just the camera. Parking recording may require a compatible hardwire kit, battery pack, and enabled parking mode.

Can I drill the bodywork to install a camera?

Some kits require holes, but drilling can affect corrosion protection, wiring, trim, and warranties. Use the supplied method or a qualified installer when the route is uncertain.
