Outside Car Cameras for Rear, Side and Parked Coverage

An external camera must be expressly designed for exterior mounting. A standard dash cam belongs inside the cabin and should not be assumed weatherproof.

An outside car camera can cover a view that glass, bodywork or a solid bulkhead blocks, but it faces rain, spray, grit, temperature changes and tampering. Choose a sealed external module whose ingress-protection claim comes from the manufacturer, and pair it only with a recorder that lists that camera as compatible.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

Can a dash cam be mounted outside a car?

Only if the manufacturer designs and rates that camera for external use. Most windscreen dash cams are not weatherproof and should stay inside.

Is a reversing camera the same as an outside dash cam?

No. A reversing camera commonly provides a live manoeuvring view, while an external dash-cam channel saves footage. Some systems combine functions, but this must be stated.

What waterproof rating should an external car camera have?

Use the specific environmental and ingress rating required for its mounting position, and read what the manufacturer's rating actually covers. Installation quality also affects sealing.

Can an outside car camera record while parked?

Only when the connected recorder supports parking mode and receives suitable protected power. External mounting alone does not create continuous surveillance.
