Dashcam Power: Plugs, Hardwiring and Battery Packs

Use switched accessory power for simple driving coverage. Choose a correctly installed hardwire kit or dedicated dash-cam battery pack when you need recording after the ignition is off.

Dashcam power determines whether the camera records only while driving or can monitor the car after shutdown. The simplest setup uses the supplied vehicle adapter or a compatible USB outlet; it is easy to remove, but the camera stops when that outlet loses power.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

How is a dashcam powered?

Most use a vehicle power adapter, USB connection or hardwire kit. The correct voltage conversion is normally built into the supplied adapter or compatible kit.

Does a dashcam drain the car battery?

A camera on switched power stops when the outlet turns off. Parking mode on constant power can draw from the vehicle battery, so use compatible low-voltage protection and follow installation instructions.

Does parking mode require hardwiring?

Many cameras require a hardwire kit, constant-power adapter or dedicated battery pack. The camera's manual should state the supported method.

Can I power a dashcam from a USB port?

Yes, if the port and cable meet the camera's input requirements and the port behaves as you expect when the ignition turns off. Test a full drive and shutdown cycle.
