Can I Leave a Meat Thermometer in While Cooking?
Yes, if the thermometer is specifically designed for leave-in cooking. Remove instant-read thermometers after each check unless their instructions clearly say otherwise.

01
Check whether it is a leave-in thermometer
Read the label or manual before heating it. Oven-safe dial thermometers, wired oven probes and compatible wireless probes are made to stay in food; ordinary instant-read thermistors and thermocouples are generally used only for a quick check.
02
Keep the display and cable within their limits
A heat-resistant probe does not automatically make the display oven-safe. With a wired model, route the cable as directed and keep the base outside the oven unless the manufacturer explicitly permits another arrangement.
03
Insert the sensor into the cold spot
Place the sensing area in the thickest edible portion, away from bone, gristle and large pockets of fat. On a thin piece, insert from the side so the sensor reaches the center.
04
Set an alert before the expected finish
A leave-in thermometer is most useful when its alarm gives you time to check another location. Food can heat unevenly, so confirm doneness in more than one spot when the cut is large or irregular.
05
Remove and clean it correctly
After cooking, use heat protection on hot probes and cables. Clean the food-contact section according to the manual, and never immerse a connector or display unless its stated protection allows it.
Common questions
Questions before you buy
Can I leave a digital meat thermometer in the oven?
Only if it is an oven-safe leave-in model. Many digital instant-read thermometers must be removed immediately after the reading.
Do I leave my meat thermometer in a turkey while cooking?
You may leave an oven-safe or compatible probe in place. Position it in the thickest part of the breast or inner thigh as directed, without touching bone.
Can a wireless meat thermometer stay in while cooking?
A leave-in wireless probe can, provided the insertion depth and internal and ambient temperatures remain within its specified limits.
Why did my thermometer melt in the oven?
The display, handle or cable may not have been rated for oven heat. Stop using a damaged thermometer and replace it with a model approved for the intended cooking environment.
Start with a dependable instant-read thermometer; add a leave-in or wireless probe when you want continuous monitoring.
