Where to Place a Meat Thermometer in a Turkey

Aim for the innermost thigh and wing and the thickest breast. The probe must sit in meat, not against bone.

01

Where to place a thermometer in turkey while cooking

Position an oven-safe leave-in probe in the thickest usable section of meat before cooking. For final safety checks, USDA specifies the innermost thigh and wing and the thickest breast.

02

Find the thigh without hitting bone

Insert into the inner thigh near where it joins the body. If the reading changes sharply or the tip meets hard resistance, withdraw slightly and angle into meat.

03

Measure the thickest breast

Approach the center of the thickest breast from the side or front, following the thermometer maker's required insertion depth.

04

Check the wing and stuffing

Measure the innermost wing area. If the turkey is stuffed, test the center of the stuffing as a separate location.

05

Confirm the coldest reading

Repeat in nearby spots because a large bird heats unevenly. Every required location must reach the safe minimum, not just the warmest one.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

Where to place thermometer in turkey while cooking?

Place a leave-in probe in thick meat away from bone, then verify the innermost thigh and wing and thickest breast before serving.

Can I put the probe in the turkey breast?

Yes. Center the sensing area in the thickest breast meat and avoid the breastbone.

Does a stuffed turkey need another reading?

Yes. USDA says the center of the stuffing must also reach 165°F.

Why does the temperature change when I move the probe?

Large birds have hot and cold zones. Several readings help locate the coolest relevant area.
