Guide

Where Do You Place a Meat Thermometer in a Turkey?

Use three checkpoints: inner thigh, inner wing, and thickest breast. The sensing zone belongs in meat and clear of bone.

01

Identify the three turkey checkpoints

Locate the breast on top, the thigh where the leg meets the body, and the inner wing area. USDA names all three for a whole-bird safety check.

02

Place the probe in the inner thigh

Enter the fleshy inner thigh and guide the sensor toward its center without contacting the joint or bone.

03

Place it in the thickest breast

Find the fullest section and insert far enough to cover the thermometer's sensing zone. Do not push through into the cavity.

04

Place it near the inner wing

Measure the innermost wing section where there is enough meat to surround the sensing point.

05

Read stuffing separately

A breast or thigh result does not establish the center temperature of stuffing. Test that center independently.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

Where do you place a meat thermometer in a turkey first?

Start with the innermost thigh, then check the innermost wing and thickest breast.

Is the turkey thigh or breast the best place?

Neither replaces the other for a whole bird. USDA advises checking both, plus the innermost wing.

How can I tell if the probe is touching bone?

Bone feels like a hard stop and may produce a misleading reading. Pull back and redirect into the surrounding meat.

Where do you check turkey stuffing?

Insert the thermometer into the center of the stuffing, which must reach 165°F under USDA guidance.
