Meat Thermometers for Hamburgers and Thin Patties

Use a fine-tip instant-read thermometer and insert it sideways to reach the center of the patty. Check more than one burger, especially when thickness or grill position varies.

A meat thermometer for hamburgers needs a small sensing tip and a quick reading because a patty is too thin for easy top-down insertion. Lift the burger briefly and slide the probe into the side until the tip reaches the center.

Questions before you buy

How do you use a meat thermometer on a hamburger?

Insert a fine probe horizontally through the side until the sensing tip reaches the center. Avoid stopping near the hot surface or pushing through the far side.

What internal temperature should a beef hamburger reach?

USDA guidance sets a safe minimum internal temperature of 160°F for ground beef.

Can burger color show whether it is safely cooked?

No. Ground beef can change color before or after it reaches a safe temperature, so verify the center with a food thermometer.

Do you need to check every hamburger?

At minimum, sample patties of different thicknesses and positions because grill heat varies. In a food-service setting, follow the applicable monitoring procedure.
