California Radar Detector Laws: Detectors, Jammers and Mounting

California law draws an important distinction between passive detection and devices that interfere with speed measurement. Windshield placement has separate restrictions, so review the current code before installing equipment.

California radar detector laws are mainly a question of which device you mean and where you place it. The state code expressly restricts jamming or interference equipment; windshield obstruction rules are separate. For drivers comparing a standard detector, the relevant research path is legality, mounting and the model?s own installation instructions.

Questions before you buy

Are radar detectors legal in California?

The California Vehicle Code provisions checked for this guide prohibit devices that jam or interfere with speed-measuring equipment; they do not state a general ban on passive radar detectors. Check current state and federal rules for your vehicle and circumstances.

Are radar jammers legal in California?

No. California Vehicle Code section 28150 prohibits equipping a vehicle with, or possessing, a device designed to jam or interfere with speed-measuring equipment, subject to the statute?s stated exception.

Can I mount a radar detector on my windshield in California?

California Vehicle Code section 26708 restricts objects attached to or placed on windshields, with listed exceptions. Review the current statute and choose a placement that does not obstruct the driver?s view.

Do commercial drivers have different rules?

Federal rules can apply to commercial motor vehicles even when state rules differ. Check the current federal regulation and your employer?s policy before using a detector in a commercial vehicle.
