Radar Detector Code Meanings: What Each Alert Tells You

Most detector codes identify a band, signal strength or direction. They describe what the unit is receiving; they do not by themselves confirm that police are nearby.

Radar detector code meanings are easiest to read in three parts: the band label tells you the signal category, the strength display indicates how strongly it is being received, and arrows on some models suggest its direction. X, K and Ka are common radar-band labels, while laser or LIDAR is a separate alert type. Exact icons, tones and frequency displays vary by model, so use this as a plain-language guide alongside your owner’s manual. A K-band alert can come from non-enforcement sources such as vehicle safety sensors or automatic doors; an alert alone does not identify its source.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

What does K mean on a radar detector?

K identifies a radar band used by some enforcement equipment, but K-band sources also include vehicle safety systems and other devices. The label identifies a frequency band, not the identity of the transmitter.

What does Ka mean on a radar detector?

Ka is another radar-band label used by traffic radar systems. Its precise frequency range and alert presentation depend on the detector and its settings, so check the manual for the model you own.

What does a signal-strength bar mean?

It indicates the relative strength of the signal being received by the detector. A stronger display is not a reliable distance reading and does not by itself confirm a police radar source.

Why does my radar detector keep alerting to K band?

Repeated K alerts can come from non-police sources, including traffic sensors, automatic doors and some vehicle safety systems. The Uniden support guidance explains that filtering can reduce nuisance alerts but may also affect legitimate K-band warnings.

What do arrows mean on a radar detector?

On directional models, arrows indicate the direction the detector associates with a signal. Valentine One describes its arrows as Ahead, Beside and Behind; other models may use different displays or definitions.

Does a laser alert mean the detector can stop a laser speed reading?

A laser alert reports detected laser light; it does not mean the detector has blocked or defeated a speed measurement. Follow local laws and drive within posted limits.
