Radar Detector Codes Explained: Bands, Alerts and Display Symbols

Most radar detector band codes identify radio-frequency ranges such as X, K and Ka. Other letters and numbers are model-specific display or alert codes, so use the manual for your unit.

Radar detector codes most commonly refer to band labels such as X, K and Ka. They describe ranges of radio frequencies that detectors are designed to receive; NHTSA's speed-measuring-device training material lists example frequencies for X and K radar and discusses Ka. The letters do not identify a specific police officer, location or certain ticket.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

What do X, K and Ka mean on a radar detector?

They are band labels for radio-frequency ranges detected by the unit. NHTSA training material gives example speed-measuring radar frequencies for X and K and describes Ka-band equipment; a detector's manual explains its display and supported ranges.

What does a number of bars mean on a radar detector?

Bars commonly indicate relative signal strength, but the scale and behavior differ by model. Check the owner's manual rather than comparing bar counts across brands.

Does a Ka alert always mean police radar?

An alert means the detector is receiving a signal it classifies in that band; the alert alone does not identify the source with certainty. Follow the manufacturer's guidance and drive within posted limits.

What does L mean in radar detector codes?

L is not a universal radar band code. It may identify a mode or status on a particular model; use the exact detector manual to interpret it.
