WiFi Booster Aerials: What They Do and What to Buy

An external aerial can help shape a device’s radio coverage, but it cannot overcome every wall or a weak router link. Compare antenna design with the whole extender setup.

A WiFi booster aerial is the antenna used to send or receive a wireless signal. On an extender, external antennas may be adjustable, but the result still depends on the extender’s connection back to the router, the client device and the building. The antenna by itself is not a WiFi service or a guarantee of more coverage.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

Does a WiFi booster aerial increase internet speed?

An antenna does not increase the speed supplied by your internet plan. Better signal conditions may improve a weak wireless link, but real throughput depends on the router, extender, device and surroundings.

Are external antennas better than internal antennas on an extender?

Not automatically. External antennas can often be repositioned, while internal designs may be more compact; compare the device’s documented performance and placement needs rather than antenna appearance.

Can I replace the aerial on any WiFi extender?

No. Use only antennas and connectors approved for the specific model. Many devices have fixed antennas, and an unsupported replacement can affect operation or compliance.

How should I position an extender’s antennas?

Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and test coverage at the target device location. Antenna orientation and the extender’s position both matter, so adjust one at a time and check the connection.
