WiFi LAN Extenders: How to Add an Ethernet Connection

A wifi lan extender can mean a wireless repeater with a LAN socket or a device that turns a wired Ethernet feed into Wi-Fi. Match the port and operating mode to your actual connection.

Some range extenders provide a LAN port for a TV, console or computer while the unit links wirelessly to the router. In access-point mode, Ethernet carries the upstream connection instead. A port alone does not mean the product can extend a wired LAN over powerline, so read the mode and interface specifications before buying.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

Can I connect a device to a Wi-Fi extender with Ethernet?

Yes, if the extender has a LAN port and supports wired-client use in range-extender mode. Check the model manual and confirm its port speed suits the connected device.

Does an Ethernet port make an extender an access point?

Not by itself. Many models have a separate access-point mode in which a wired router connection supplies the network being broadcast; check the operating modes listed for the unit.

What is the difference between a LAN extender and a Wi-Fi extender?

Wi-Fi extenders relay a wireless network. The phrase LAN extender may also refer to equipment that carries a wired network over another medium, so verify whether the product uses Wi-Fi, Ethernet or powerline.

Can I use an extender to connect a gaming console?

A LAN socket can provide a wired link to a console when the extender supports that client connection. The console still shares the extender's wireless backhaul unless the unit is configured as an access point with Ethernet upstream.
