WiFi Extenders and 5G: Understand the Difference

A “5G” search can refer to 5 GHz WiFi or fifth-generation mobile broadband. A range extender that supports 5 GHz WiFi does not create a 5G cellular connection.

A WiFi extender 5G listing may mean a device that uses the 5 GHz WiFi band, or a router that connects to a 5G mobile network. These are different technologies. A 5 GHz WiFi range extender relays a local router’s wireless network; it does not receive 5G mobile broadband unless it is a cellular router with the required modem and SIM or eSIM support.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

Is a WiFi extender with 5 GHz the same as a 5G WiFi extender?

No. 5 GHz is a WiFi frequency band; 5G refers to a generation of cellular mobile networks. A dual-band extender may support 5 GHz WiFi while having no cellular modem.

Can a WiFi booster improve 5G mobile signal?

A standard WiFi booster extends a router’s WiFi coverage and does not boost cellular reception. For 5G mobile broadband, check the router, SIM and carrier coverage requirements.

Can a 5G router extend my home WiFi?

A 5G router can provide internet over a mobile network and create local WiFi, but it does not necessarily extend the coverage of a separate broadband router. Check whether it supports the network mode you need.

What should I buy for a 5 GHz WiFi dead zone?

Look for a dual-band WiFi range extender or compatible mesh node that supports your router. Confirm its 5 GHz support and place it where it can still receive a strong signal.
