Dashcam GPS Tracking: Location Data and Remote Access

Built-in GPS can stamp location and speed into recordings. Remote vehicle tracking is a separate connected feature that normally needs power and internet access.

Dashcam GPS tracking can mean two very different things. Standard GPS logging records the route, time, location, and sometimes speed alongside the video. A dashcam with GPS tracking that lets you locate a vehicle from elsewhere also needs a communications path, such as built-in LTE or an internet-connected hotspot.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

Can a dash cam track a car when it is turned off?

Only if the camera still has power and supports remote connected tracking. Ordinary GPS logging stops when the camera shuts down.

Does GPS on a dash cam require a subscription?

Recording GPS coordinates into video usually does not. Remote location services may require cellular data or a manufacturer plan.

Can dash cam GPS show where I drove?

Many GPS-equipped cameras can display route and speed data in their app or desktop viewer. The exact data and export options vary by model.

Can GPS speed data be disabled?

Some cameras let you hide or disable the on-video speed stamp while retaining other location data. Check the model's settings and manual.
