GPS Dashcams: Location, Speed and Route Data Explained

GPS adds time, position and often speed metadata to footage. It does not automatically provide navigation, live tracking or cellular connectivity.

A GPS dashcam can attach location, time and speed information to recorded video, helping you place a clip on a route. Depending on the model, that data may appear as an optional stamp on the footage or as metadata viewed in an app or desktop player.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

What does GPS do on a dash cam?

It records position and accurate time, and many cameras also derive vehicle speed. Compatible software can display the route alongside video.

Does a GPS dash cam give driving directions?

Usually not. GPS in a dash cam is mainly for recording metadata, not turn-by-turn navigation.

Can I turn off the speed stamp?

Many models let you hide speed or location overlays while still recording other data. Confirm the setting in the exact model's manual.

Can GPS track my parked car from anywhere?

Not by itself. Remote location tracking needs cellular or another internet connection plus a compatible service.

Is GPS dash cam data always accurate?

No. Tunnels, tall buildings, mounting position and satellite reception can delay or reduce accuracy, so treat it as supporting information rather than infallible proof.
