Dash Cam GPS Tracking: Route Logging vs Live Location

Built-in GPS usually records location, speed and time alongside footage. It does not automatically mean you can see the car remotely.

Dash cam GPS tracking normally means journey logging, not a live vehicle tracker. A GPS-enabled camera can attach location, speed and time data to recordings for later playback in an app or desktop viewer. VIOFO describes this behaviour for the A119 Mini 2, and Nextbase lists a 10 Hz GPS receiver on the 322GW.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

Does a GPS dash cam track the car live?

Usually not. Standard GPS records position for later playback; live tracking also needs a data connection, cloud service and compatible account.

What information does dash cam GPS record?

Depending on the model, it can record route, coordinates, time and vehicle speed. The app or desktop viewer determines how that information is displayed.

Is GPS the same as Wi-Fi on a dash cam?

No. GPS receives positioning signals, while Wi-Fi links the camera to a nearby phone or network. Neither alone guarantees remote access.

Can I turn off speed data on GPS footage?

Some models let you change the data overlay while retaining GPS logs. Check the exact camera manual and playback software settings.

Do I need GPS in a dash cam?

It is useful when location and timing add context to a recording. If you only need video evidence and want a simpler camera, it is optional.
