GPS Dashcam Guide: Location, Speed and Route Recording

GPS can attach location and speed data to footage, but implementation varies. Check whether the receiver is built in and how data can be viewed or hidden.

A GPS dashcam can record position and, on supported models, speed alongside the video. That can help place a clip on a route or establish where an event occurred, but GPS does not improve the picture itself and it is not automatically live vehicle tracking. Decide which type of location record you actually need.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

What does GPS on a dash cam do?

On compatible cameras, GPS records location and may record speed with the footage. The maker's viewer may also display the journey on a map.

Does a dash cam with GPS provide live tracking?

Not by GPS alone. Live remote location generally needs a communications connection, compatible app or cloud feature in addition to satellite positioning.

Can speed be removed from GPS dashcam video?

Some cameras let you disable a speed overlay while retaining other data, but controls vary. Check the manual and export settings for the exact model.

Do all compact dash cams have built-in GPS?

No. Some small models lack their own receiver or obtain location through another connected device, so the phrase “with GPS” needs checking carefully.
