Does Tesla Dashcam Record All the Time?
Tesla Dashcam can continuously record recent driving footage when enabled and suitable USB storage is available, but it does not preserve everything indefinitely. Saved clips and Sentry events use separate folders and storage rules.

01
What Tesla Dashcam records while driving
With Dashcam enabled and a properly formatted USB drive available, the car records recent footage in a rolling buffer. That recent footage is overwritten unless you save a clip manually or an eligible event triggers saving, depending on settings and vehicle configuration.
02
How long does Tesla keep Dashcam footage?
Do not treat the rolling footage as a permanent archive. Tesla's manual describes RecentClips as looped footage and separates saved footage into SavedClips; storage use and available features can change with vehicle hardware and software.
03
Does Tesla record when it is parked?
Sentry Mode, when enabled and supported, can monitor the vehicle while parked and save footage for detected security events. It uses energy and is not active in every situation, including when the battery reaches the limit described in the vehicle manual.
04
Save a clip before it is overwritten
Use the Dashcam control or configured honk-to-save option where available. After an incident, avoid unnecessary driving and copy the required files from the USB drive as soon as it is safe.
05
Check the USB drive and camera status
The touchscreen Dashcam icon communicates recording status. If recording is unavailable, confirm the storage device, formatting and port requirements in the manual for your specific Tesla and software version.
06
Understand privacy and coverage limits
Camera views have blind spots, and lighting or contamination can reduce usable detail. Follow local rules when recording or sharing footage and do not assume Sentry Mode prevents theft or damage.
Common questions
Questions before you buy
Does Tesla Dashcam record all the time while driving?
It can maintain rolling recent footage when Dashcam is enabled and compatible USB storage is present. Older recent footage is overwritten rather than kept forever.
Does Tesla record while the car is off?
Sentry Mode can monitor and save qualifying events while parked, but it must be enabled and has energy, location and battery-level limitations.
Can I recover overwritten Tesla Dashcam footage?
Do not depend on recovery. Save important clips promptly; once storage has been overwritten, the footage may no longer be available.
Does Tesla Dashcam record audio?
Tesla's owner documentation describes video from the vehicle cameras, not cabin audio as part of Dashcam clips.
Why is the Tesla Dashcam icon unavailable?
The USB device may be missing, incorrectly formatted or connected to an unsuitable port. Check the exact vehicle manual and on-screen alerts.
VIOFO A229 Pro 2CH is our broad recommendation for detailed front and rear coverage. Garmin Mini 3 favors discretion, while Garmin X310 is the sharper single-camera choice.
A front and rear dash cam records both directions and can provide context a single lens misses. Check the rear-camera cable route and simultaneous recording resolution before buying.
Start with the coverage you need: front-only, front and rear, cabin or a wider multi-camera view. Then compare recording detail, storage and power requirements.
The A329S serves buyers seeking high-detail multichannel recording; A229 models cover more moderate dual-camera needs, while A119 Mini 2 is the compact front-only option.
