How to Choose a Thermometer Gun for Cooking and Food

An infrared gun is useful for griddles, pizza stones, oil surfaces, and receiving checks. It measures surfaces, not the center of meat.

A thermometer gun for cooking reads infrared energy from a surface without touching it. That makes a food thermometer gun useful for checking a griddle, pizza stone, pan, or the top of a liquid, but it cannot measure the interior of poultry, burgers, or roasts. Pair it with a penetration probe when internal doneness matters.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

Can a thermometer gun tell whether meat is cooked?

No. It reads the outer surface only. Use a penetration thermometer to measure the center of meat.

What does distance-to-spot ratio mean?

It describes how the measured area grows as you move farther away. Stand close enough that the target fully fills the instrument's measurement spot.

Is the laser on an infrared thermometer the sensor?

No. The laser assists aiming; the infrared detector measures a broader spot whose size depends on distance.

Why are shiny pans hard to measure with a heat gun?

Reflective, low-emissivity surfaces can reflect surrounding infrared energy. Follow the manual's guidance for emissivity and surface preparation.
