Food Thermometer Guns for Cooking

An infrared gun reads surface temperature without contact. It is useful for pans, griddles and oil surfaces, but it does not measure a joint's core.

A food thermometer gun is an infrared instrument for reading a surface from a distance. In cooking, that makes it handy for checking a griddle, pizza stone or the surface of hot oil without dipping a probe.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

Can a thermometer gun check cooked meat?

It can read the surface only. Use a clean probe in the thickest part to assess the core.

Can you use an infrared thermometer for frying oil?

It can estimate the oil surface when used within its range and instructions, but reflections, steam and distance can affect the reading.

What does distance-to-spot ratio mean?

It describes the size of the measured area at a given distance. A larger ratio lets you target a smaller area from farther away.

Why does shiny cookware confuse an infrared thermometer?

Polished metal has low emissivity and reflects surrounding infrared energy. Follow the instrument guidance rather than assuming the displayed value is the pan temperature.
