Non-Contact Food Thermometers for Cooking

A non-contact thermometer is quick and clean for surface screening. It cannot tell you the internal temperature of meat, poultry or a deep container.

A non contact food thermometer reads infrared energy from a surface, making it useful for griddles, pans, cooling food and quick receiving checks. A non contact thermometer for cooking does not measure beneath that surface, so it cannot confirm the center of a roast or chicken.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

Can a non-contact thermometer check if meat is done?

It can read the meat's surface only. Use an appropriate food probe in the thickest part to confirm internal temperature.

How close should an infrared thermometer be to food?

Use the maker's distance-to-spot ratio so the measured circle stays entirely on the target. Farther away means a larger sampled area.

Can an infrared thermometer measure hot oil?

It reads the oil surface and may be affected by reflections, movement or steam. A suitable immersion probe provides a direct liquid measurement.

Why are shiny pans difficult for non-contact thermometers?

Reflective surfaces can emit and reflect infrared energy differently from the assumptions of a fixed-emissivity tool. Measure a suitable food surface or use a contact sensor.
