Non-Contact Food Thermometers for Cooking

A non-contact infrared thermometer is fast and hygienic for surface checks. It does not penetrate food, so pair it with a probe when core temperature matters.

A non contact food thermometer measures surface temperature from a distance, normally using infrared sensing. It is suited to a hot plate, pizza stone, griddle, pan or a quick first check of incoming and stored food.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

Are non-contact food thermometers accurate?

They can be accurate for suitable surfaces when used within their specified range, optics and emissivity settings. They do not provide internal food temperature.

Can a non-contact thermometer measure frying oil?

It reads the surface. Stir carefully where appropriate and follow the maker's guidance, because steam, reflections and temperature layers can affect the result.

Can I use a forehead thermometer for cooking?

No. Medical thermometers are designed for a narrow human-temperature range and a different target; use an instrument intended for cooking.

Does non-contact mean no cleaning is needed?

No. Keep the lens and housing clean as directed, and prevent the instrument from becoming a source of cross-contamination in the kitchen.
