ThermoWorks RFX Meat Thermometer System Explained

RFX is a modular wireless cooking system built around the RFX MEAT probe and RFX GATEWAY. The Gateway is required, so compare kits rather than the probe alone.

The RFX meat thermometer is ThermoWorks' wire-free monitoring system for ovens, grills, and smokers. The RFX MEAT probe uses four internal thermistors and communicates with an RFX GATEWAY over a sub-one-gigahertz radio link; the Gateway then supports remote monitoring through the ThermoWorks app.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

Does the RFX MEAT probe work without the Gateway?

ThermoWorks states that an RFX GATEWAY is required for connection. A standalone probe is therefore an expansion item, not a complete monitoring system.

Is RFX Bluetooth?

The probe-to-Gateway link uses ThermoWorks' sub-one-gigahertz radio technology rather than Bluetooth. The Gateway provides the bridge used for app monitoring.

How many sensors are in an RFX probe?

ThermoWorks specifies four thermistors in the RFX MEAT probe. Its app can report the lowest internal reading and offers an advanced view of the sensors.

Can the RFX probe be used in a high-heat grill?

ThermoWorks publishes separate limits for the internal section and exposed section. Insert the probe to its minimum immersion line and stay within every stated limit.
