RFX Meat Thermometer Systems Explained

RFX is ThermoWorks' leave-in wireless system: the probe talks to a gateway, which relays cooking data to the app. It is aimed at cooks who value connection range over a screen-only setup.

An RFX meat thermometer is for continuous, remote cooking checks rather than quick handheld readings. ThermoWorks' RFX MEAT probe uses sub-GHz radio to reach the RFX Gateway; the gateway then sends readings through Wi-Fi or Bluetooth to the ThermoWorks app.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

What is an RFX meat thermometer?

It is a leave-in wireless probe system from ThermoWorks. RFX MEAT sends temperature data over sub-GHz radio to a gateway, which connects to the ThermoWorks app.

Does RFX need a gateway?

Yes. ThermoWorks states that RFX MEAT requires an RFX Gateway for connection.

How far can the RFX thermometer transmit?

ThermoWorks publishes up to 1,500 ft line of sight between RFX MEAT and the gateway. Walls, cooker construction and local conditions can reduce real-world range.

Can the RFX probe be used over direct heat?

ThermoWorks states an external operating range up to 538°C for the probe. Stay within every limit in the current instructions and keep the gateway and charging hardware away from heat.
