Water Thermometers for Cooking and Hot Liquids

Use a food-safe probe whose range covers the task and whose sensing area can be immersed safely. Waterproof and immersible are not interchangeable claims.

A water thermometer for cooking needs more than a suitable numeric range. Its sensing area must sit at the required depth without the display, connector or unsealed handle entering the liquid, and its materials must be intended for food contact.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

Can a meat thermometer measure water temperature?

Yes, if its range and permitted immersion depth cover the task. Keep any non-immersible display or connector out of the water.

Is waterproof the same as fully immersible?

No. A water-resistance rating may cover splashes or limited exposure; only the manufacturer's instructions define whether full immersion is allowed.

Should the thermometer touch the pot?

No. Measure the liquid itself, with the sensing area away from the pot wall and bottom.

What thermometer works for boiling water and candy?

Choose a food-safe model with a range high enough for the recipe and a clip or probe design that holds the sensor at the correct depth.
