Reverse Car Cameras and Dash Cam Combinations

A reversing camera helps with manoeuvring; a rear dash cam records journeys. Combination systems can do both, but only when their display and reverse-trigger wiring support it.

A reverse car camera is designed to show the area behind you while manoeuvring. That is different from a rear-facing dash camera, which records evidence during a journey but may not provide a live reversing display.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

Is a reverse camera the same as a rear dash cam?

No. A reverse camera prioritises a live parking view; a rear dash cam prioritises recorded evidence. Some combination systems support both roles.

Can a dash cam be used as a reversing camera?

Only if the system provides a suitable live display and reverse-trigger mode. A normal rear recorder may show video in an app but still be unsuitable for immediate manoeuvring.

Does a reversing camera need professional installation?

Plug-in kits may be manageable, but integrated displays and trigger wiring often justify professional fitting. Installation must not interfere with vehicle safety systems.

Where is a reverse car camera mounted?

It is commonly fitted near the rear number plate or boot handle for a centred low view. The position should protect the lens while keeping the required area visible.
