Reverse Car Camera and Dash Cam Combination Guide

A reverse camera helps with low-speed manoeuvring; a rear dash cam records events. A combined system can do both only when its display and camera are specifically designed for reversing.

A reverse car camera is designed to show the area behind you while manoeuvring, usually through an in-dash screen or mirror display. A rear dash camera is primarily a recorder. If you want a dash cam with reverse camera functionality, check for live display switching, reverse-trigger wiring and a suitably positioned external camera.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

Is a rear dash cam the same as a reverse camera?

No. A rear dash cam records traffic behind the vehicle, while a reversing camera is positioned and displayed to assist low-speed manoeuvring.

Can one camera work as both a dash cam and reverse camera?

Some purpose-built systems support both recording and a reverse-triggered display. Confirm this in the product manual; a standard two-channel dash cam may not provide the right view or switching.

Are wireless reverse cameras really wireless?

Wireless commonly describes the video link. The camera and display still need power, and the rear unit may need a connection to the reversing circuit.

Where should a reverse camera be mounted?

It is usually mounted centrally and low at the rear for a useful view of obstacles. Placement must be secure, weather-resistant and compliant with the vehicle and kit instructions.
