Waterproof Head Torches: Understand Ratings Before You Buy

Start with the activity and the manufacturer exact ingress rating; weather resistance and underwater use are different requirements.

Choose a waterproof head torch by its stated IP rating and usage limits. IPX4 weather resistance is not evidence for swimming or diving; Black Diamond lists the Spot 400 as IPX8 and describes a defined submersion test. For kayaking, surfing or swimming, read the specific manual and use equipment intended for that environment. See rechargeable and brand options for other needs.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

Can I use an IPX4 head torch for swimming?

IPX4 is a splash-resistance rating, not a swimming rating. Use a lamp specifically rated by its manufacturer for the intended underwater conditions.

Is IPX8 waterproof enough for diving?

Do not assume so. IPX8 test depth and duration are defined by the manufacturer, and a headlamp rating does not make it diving equipment.

What is the difference between waterproof and water-resistant?

The product tested ingress rating and limitations matter more than the label. Read the manual for exposure duration, depth and drying instructions.

Can I leave batteries inside a wet headlamp?

Follow the manufacturer care instructions. Dry the lamp and battery compartment as directed, and inspect seals before storage.
