Laser Food Thermometers for Cooking

The laser is only an aiming guide; the infrared sensor reads a surface area. Use one for pans, griddles and ovens, then use a probe for the centre of food.

A laser food thermometer is an infrared surface thermometer with a visible aiming point. The laser thermometer for cooking does not send a measuring beam into food: its sensor collects infrared energy from a circular area that grows as you move away.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

Does the laser measure the food temperature?

No. The laser shows where you are aiming; an infrared detector measures energy emitted by the surface.

Can a laser thermometer measure through an oven door?

No. It normally reads the glass surface rather than the food behind it.

Is a cooking thermometer laser safe to point at food?

Follow the product's laser classification and never direct the beam at eyes. The larger food-safety limitation is that it reads only the surface.

Why does distance change a laser thermometer reading?

The measurement spot expands with distance and may include cooler or hotter surroundings. Use the stated distance ratio and fill the target area.
