Laser Thermometers for Cooking and Food Surfaces

A laser thermometer for cooking is an infrared surface thermometer with an aiming laser. It helps check cookware and surface heat, but a probe is required for the centre of meat.

A laser thermometer for cooking is commonly called a temperature gun, but the laser does not sense heat. It points towards the area sampled by an infrared detector, making this tool useful for griddles, pans, pizza stones and the surface of frying oil.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

Can you use a laser thermometer for cooking?

Yes, for surface checks such as a griddle, pan or pizza stone. It does not replace a penetration probe for food-core temperatures.

Can a laser thermometer measure hot oil?

It can estimate the oil surface, subject to the instrument's range, spot size and emissivity behaviour. A suitable immersed probe gives a direct reading below the surface.

How close should a temperature gun be to food?

Use the stated distance-to-spot ratio so the measured circle fits entirely within the target. Farther away means a larger sampled area.

Is the laser on a thermometer dangerous?

Treat it as a laser device: never stare into the beam or point it at another person's eyes, and follow the product's safety label.
