WiFi Extender Speed: What Can You Expect?

An extender can improve coverage where the router signal still reaches it, but it cannot create bandwidth your broadband connection does not provide.

WiFi extender speed is shaped by the signal received from your router, the extender radio and the route between it and your device. A well-placed unit may make a weak room more usable; it is not a guaranteed speed upgrade. Compare placement, a wired access point and mesh before choosing.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

Will a WiFi extender improve speed?

It can improve the connection in a dead spot by relaying a usable router signal. The speed at the device may still be lower than beside the router, especially if the extender receives a weak signal.

Will a WiFi booster increase speed?

A booster may improve usable connection quality in a distant room, but it does not increase the broadband speed entering your home. Results depend on placement, interference and device capabilities.

Can a WiFi booster increase speed?

Sometimes it improves a device connection compared with a very weak direct link, but it cannot exceed the source connection or remove congestion.

Does a WiFi speed booster for a PC need Ethernet?

No. A PC can connect over Wi-Fi if compatible. An Ethernet port can provide a wired link from the extender to a nearby computer, subject to port and backhaul limits.
