Swamp Cooler Not Blowing Cold Air: Causes to Check

Begin with water circulation, clean media and clear airflow. Evaporative cooling also depends on dry air and adequate ventilation.

A swamp cooler not blowing cold air may have a water supply, airflow or maintenance issue—or it may be operating in conditions that limit evaporation. Check the water level and pump operation, inspect the cooling media and clear the air path, following the manual. In humid weather, an evaporative cooler may produce less noticeable cooling even when running.

Questions before you buy

Why is my swamp cooler blowing warm air?

Check whether water is reaching the cooling media, whether the media is clean and whether the unit has adequate airflow. High humidity can also limit evaporative cooling.

Should swamp cooler pads be wet?

During evaporative cooling, water should be distributed across the media as the manual specifies. If the media remains dry, check the water supply and pump safely.

Can a dirty filter or pad stop a cooler from cooling?

Dust or mineral buildup can restrict airflow or water distribution. Switch off and unplug the unit before cleaning, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

Why does my evaporative cooler work better with a window open?

Evaporative coolers bring cooled outdoor air into a space, so an outlet for existing air supports circulation. Use the ventilation arrangement recommended for the system.
