GPS-Enabled Radar Detectors: How Location Features Work

GPS adds location data to radar detection. Compare the database, update process and memory features separately from radio performance.

A GPS enabled radar detector uses satellite location data alongside its radar receiver. Depending on the model, GPS may support speed-sensitive settings, saved false-alert locations or a database of fixed camera sites. These functions are not the same as detecting a radar signal, and database coverage depends on the manufacturer update service. Compare official manuals for the Uniden R8, R4 and R7 to see which location functions each model documents.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

What is a GPS-enabled radar detector?

It combines radar reception with location features, which may support speed-based sensitivity changes or alerts from a stored database.

Does GPS detect police radar?

No. GPS provides location and speed data; the detector radio receiver detects radar signals.

Can GPS lock out false alerts?

Some models can remember stationary signals by location. Check the manual for how lockouts work and can be cleared.

Do GPS alerts need updates?

Database warnings may depend on updates and regional coverage. Check the maker update process and supported region.
