K Alert on a Radar Detector: What the Warning Means

A K alert means the detector has picked up a signal in or near its K-band scan range. The display alone cannot tell you whether that signal is police radar or a false alert.

A k alert radar detector warning means the receiver has registered energy within a K-band frequency range. It is a band identification, not a verdict that an officer is nearby. Storefront sensors and driver-assistance systems can also produce signals that some detectors report.

Questions before you buy

What does a K alert mean on a radar detector?

It means the unit has detected a signal in the K-band range configured for that detector. The alert can come from enforcement radar or another source, so interpret it with the manual and driving context.

Is every K-band alert a police radar?

No. Vehicle safety systems and other equipment can create false alerts. Do not assume an alert identifies a specific source.

Should I turn K band off?

Do not disable a band solely to silence nuisance alerts. Check local enforcement practices and your detector manual; filtering or GPS lockouts may be available on some models.

Why does my detector show K alert near the same place?

A fixed source, such as a door sensor or traffic system, may recur at that location. Some GPS-enabled detectors can remember eligible false alerts, according to their manufacturer.
