WiFi Booster: Does It Work to Improve Your Connection?

A WiFi booster can improve coverage where your router's signal is weak, provided it receives a usable signal itself. Placement and the type of extender matter.

WiFi booster does it work? Often, yes: a WiFi range extender can relay the router's existing wireless signal into a nearby weak-coverage area. It cannot create a stronger broadband connection than the one reaching the router, and its own link to the router affects the result.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

Does a WiFi range extender actually work?

It can improve usable coverage in an area that has a weak but reachable signal from the router. The result depends on placement, walls, interference and the quality of the connection between extender and router.

Will a WiFi booster increase internet speed?

It may improve the connection on a device that was suffering from weak WiFi, but it does not increase the broadband speed delivered to the router. A wireless extender can also reduce throughput because it must relay traffic over WiFi.

Where should I put a WiFi extender?

Place it between the router and the area with poor coverage, where it still receives a stable signal. Avoid hiding it behind furniture or placing it inside the dead zone you are trying to fix.

Is a WiFi extender better than a mesh system?

An extender can suit one small coverage gap and usually works with an existing router. Mesh is designed to coordinate multiple access points across a larger area, though compatibility and backhaul options vary by system.

Can an extender fix WiFi through thick walls?

It may help if placed before the signal is heavily blocked, but dense walls can weaken both the router-to-extender and extender-to-device links. A wired access point or repositioned router may be more reliable where Ethernet is available.
