Does a wifi booster work, and when will it help?

A Wi-Fi booster can improve reception where your router’s signal still reaches, but it cannot create a strong connection from a weak one. Placement and the building layout matter.

Does a wifi booster work? Often, yes: a range extender can relay a usable signal into a dead zone when it is placed where the router’s Wi-Fi remains reasonably strong. It will not repair a poor broadband connection or make a weak source signal reliable.

Questions before you buy

Does a wifi range extender actually work?

It can extend usable coverage when it receives a stable signal from the router. Performance depends on placement, obstacles, interference and the backhaul connection.

Will a Wi-Fi booster make my internet faster?

It may improve speeds in a weak-coverage area, but it does not increase the speed supplied by your internet plan. A wireless hop can also reduce throughput compared with a direct router connection.

Where should I put a Wi-Fi booster?

Place it between the router and the dead zone, where it can still receive a solid router signal. Avoid hiding it behind furniture or placing it inside the area with no reception.

Is a mesh system better than a range extender?

Mesh is often a better fit for consistent coverage and roaming across several rooms or floors. A single extender can be simpler when only one area needs help.
