Infrared Car Cameras for Night-Time Recording

Infrared is most useful for an unlit cabin, where dedicated IR LEDs can reveal occupants. It is not automatically the best choice for filming the road through glass.

An infrared car camera uses light beyond normal human vision to record subjects in darkness. In dash-cam systems, that normally means an inward-facing channel with IR LEDs for taxis, rideshare vehicles and fleets. The resulting night footage may be monochrome, but faces and events can remain visible without switching on the cabin light.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

What does infrared do on a car camera?

IR LEDs illuminate a dark nearby area for a compatible sensor, commonly the passenger cabin. This can produce visible monochrome footage without obvious cabin lighting.

Can infrared dash cams see through tinted windows?

Results vary with tint material, darkness and reflections. IR designed for cabin occupants should not be assumed to deliver clear exterior footage through every tinted window.

Is infrared better than night vision for the road?

Not necessarily. Road recording generally relies on sensor performance and exposure processing, while built-in IR is most effective at short range inside the vehicle.

Do infrared car cameras work in complete darkness?

A camera with active IR illumination can record nearby compatible subjects without visible light, but range and detail depend on the specific design.
