How to Connect an Optus WiFi Booster to Your Modem
Pair an Optus Ultra WiFi Booster with a compatible Optus modem before moving it to the area with weak coverage. Generation matters: Optus says its Gen 2 booster works with specified Gen 2 modems.

01
Check the Optus modem and booster generation
Read the model or generation from both devices before pairing. Optus lists the Ultra WiFi Booster Gen 2 as compatible with the Ultra WiFi 5G Internet Modem and the NBN Ultra WiFi Modem Gen 2; its support page says a Gen 1 booster is not compatible with the 5G modem.
02
Power the booster beside the modem
Use a nearby wall outlet and allow the unit to start. Optus advises positioning the booster close to the modem for initial pairing. Keep both devices ventilated and away from large appliances while setup is underway.
03
Pair over WiFi or Ethernet
Follow Optus's instructions for your modem. For WiFi pairing, hold the booster pairing button and start WPS pairing on the compatible modem. Alternatively, connect the supplied Ethernet cable between LAN ports; the support guide uses the mesh light to confirm pairing.
04
Move it to a useful location
After pairing, unplug the booster and place it roughly halfway toward the weak-signal area, raised and away from thick walls or large appliances. Wait for its mesh status to settle; if the light indicates a poor link, move it nearer to the modem.
05
Troubleshoot a failed Optus connection
Recheck modem generation, power and pairing steps. Try Ethernet pairing if WiFi pairing is not completing, and consult the Optus light-status instructions. For a Gen 1 modem or unresolved pairing issue, use Optus support for the specific model rather than resetting unrelated network settings.
Common questions
Questions before you buy
How do I connect an Optus WiFi booster to an Optus modem?
Check that both devices are compatible, power the booster beside the modem, then use Optus's WiFi pairing or Ethernet method for that modem. Move the booster only after the pairing status confirms a good link.
Can I connect an Optus Gen 2 booster to any modem?
No. Optus lists compatible Optus modem models, including the Ultra WiFi 5G Internet Modem and NBN Ultra WiFi Modem Gen 2. Confirm the current compatibility list for your exact hardware.
Can I pair an Optus booster with Ethernet?
Optus's Gen 2 setup instructions allow an Ethernet cable between the booster and modem during pairing. The mesh indicator confirms when that connection is established; follow the instructions for your model.
Where should I place an Optus booster after setup?
Optus recommends moving it about halfway between the modem and the weak-signal area, off the ground and away from thick walls and large appliances. If the status light shows a poor link, move it closer to the modem.
A Wi-Fi extender can help reach a weak-signal room when positioned within range of your router. Compare plug-in repeaters, mesh-compatible models, outdoor units and powerline kits by how they connect.
The right Wi-Fi extender depends on the router signal at its location, your home layout and whether you need Ethernet, outdoor placement or powerline networking.
Start with the network standard and location of the dead spot. NETGEAR?s EX6120 is a dual-band AC model, while EAX15 adds WiFi 6; check exact router and firmware compatibility before buying.
