Rear View Dash Cams and Mirror Camera Systems

Decide whether you need evidence behind the car, a live digital-mirror view or reversing help. Those jobs overlap, but they are not identical.

A rear view dash cam records events behind the vehicle, but the term also covers mirror-mounted displays that show a live rear-camera feed. Choose the function first. Evidence recording favours reliable loop capture and protected incident files; a digital mirror needs a clear, low-latency display; reversing assistance requires suitable placement and switching behaviour.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

Is a rear view dash cam the same as a reversing camera?

Not always. A dash cam records journeys, while a reversing camera is designed to assist manoeuvring. Some mirror systems combine both functions if installed accordingly.

Should the rear dash camera go inside or outside?

Interior mounting is simpler and weather-protected but films through the glass. Exterior mounting can avoid tint and demister lines, provided the camera is designed for external use.

Can a mirror dash cam replace the original mirror?

Some products strap over an existing mirror and others require a dedicated fitting. Check vehicle compatibility, reflective performance when the screen is off and the manufacturer’s installation instructions.

Does a rear camera record while driving forward?

A true dual-channel dash cam normally records its rear channel throughout the journey. A reversing-only camera may activate solely when reverse gear is selected.
