Dash Cam Rear View Systems: Cameras, Mirrors and Coverage

A rear-window dash camera records what happens behind you; a mirror-display system can also show a live rear view. Decide whether evidence, visibility or both is your priority.

A dash cam rear view setup can describe either a second recording camera on the rear window or a digital-mirror system that displays a live image. Both can record behind the car, but only a suitable display system is designed to replace or supplement the optical mirror view.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

Is a rear view dash cam the same as a backup camera?

No. A dash cam records journeys; a backup camera is designed to assist low-speed reversing. Some mirror systems combine functions, but you must verify the inputs and trigger behavior.

Where does the rear dash camera mount?

Most dual dash cams place it high inside the rear window. External waterproof cameras are used by some mirror systems and require more involved cable routing.

Will window tint affect the rear camera?

Yes. Dark tint can reduce available light and may worsen night footage, while heater lines or reflections can obscure the image.

Can a rear dash cam see the sides of the car?

Only partly, depending on lens angle and placement. A front-and-rear system still leaves side blind areas.

Does a rear camera lower front recording quality?

Some systems reduce the available front frame rate or resolution when an additional camera is active. Check the exact multi-channel recording modes.
