Dash Cams With Loop Recording: Storage Explained

Loop recording keeps the camera running by replacing the oldest ordinary clips when storage fills. Locked event files are handled separately, so card maintenance still matters.

A dash cam with loop recording saves driving video as consecutive short files. When the usable card space is full, it deletes the oldest unprotected clip and continues recording, so you do not have to clear the card after every trip.

Questions before you buy

Does loop recording delete everything on a dash cam?

It normally overwrites the oldest ordinary recordings first. Protected event files may be stored separately, but their space is finite and management differs by camera.

What loop recording interval should I use?

Short clips are easier to handle and reduce the impact of one corrupted file. Use a duration supported by the camera and remember that the recorder should continue seamlessly between files.

Why did my dash cam stop loop recording?

A full protected-file area, an incompatible or worn card, or incorrect formatting can interrupt recording. Save needed footage, check the camera warning, and follow its card troubleshooting steps.

Does loop recording work in parking mode?

Many cameras use looping in parking mode, but only while properly powered. Parking files may have separate folders, triggers, and overwrite rules.
