Which Micro Card Does a Dash Cam Need?

In most product listings, “micro card” means microSD. Use the precise card type, capacity and speed class stated in your dash cam manual.

A micro card for dash cam use is normally a microSD card, but that shorthand is too vague for a safe purchase. The camera manual should specify whether it accepts microSDHC or microSDXC, the supported capacity range and the minimum speed class. Cards outside those limits may fail to format or record reliably even if they fit the slot.

Questions before you buy

Is a micro card the same as a microSD card?

“Micro card” is informal wording and usually refers to microSD, but it is not a complete specification. Check the microSD family, capacity and speed marks required by the camera.

Will any microSD card work in a dash cam?

No. The camera may limit card type, capacity and speed class, and continuous recording favors high-endurance products. Follow the model-specific manual.

What do the symbols on a microSD card mean?

They identify capacity family and performance classes. The SD Association explains Speed Class, UHS Speed Class and Video Speed Class as minimum write-performance systems.

Should I format a new micro card in the dash cam?

Follow the camera maker's setup instructions; many require or recommend in-camera formatting. Back up any needed files first because formatting erases the card.
