Dashcams With Suction Mounts: How to Choose

A suction mount suits drivers who move a camera between vehicles or want reversible installation. The tradeoff is more bulk and a greater chance of movement than a well-fitted adhesive mount.

A dashcam with suction mount is easiest to justify when the camera must move between cars, rental vehicles, or work vans. The cup releases without leaving an adhesive pad, and the angle is usually quick to adjust. A dashcam suction mount also needs more windshield space, so placement deserves as much attention as image quality.

Common questions

Questions before you buy

Are suction mounts good for dashcams?

They are useful for temporary or shared-vehicle setups. They are usually bulkier than adhesive mounts and should be checked regularly for movement or loss of suction.

How do I keep a dashcam suction cup from falling?

Clean and dry both the glass and cup, install at the temperature specified by the maker, and engage the lock fully. Replace a warped or cracked cup rather than adding improvised adhesive.

Can a suction-mounted dashcam damage a windshield?

A normal mount used as directed should not require permanent modification, but grit, force, or installation over damaged glass can cause problems. Follow the mount and vehicle instructions.

Is a suction mount legal on every windshield?

No. Windshield obstruction rules and permitted mounting zones vary by state, so check the law for every place in which the vehicle is used.
